The Food Bank of New York: A Helping Hand to Those in Need!

The Food Bank of New York City was founded in 1983 as the first non-profit food bank in the United States. The goal is to organize food, information, and support for needy New Yorkers through a network of more than 100 food banks and food chambers across the country.

Management

The Food Bank is led by a voluntary board of directors and has over 100 full-time employees, a network of more than 1,000 food banks and food chambers in New York City, including the largest food bank network in the United States, and is certified as a member of the National Association of Food Banks and Feeding America. There is also an afternoon program that offers free meals to children, as well as programs for seniors, children with disabilities, the homeless, and the elderly.

Awards

In 2016, the Food Bank received the John Dewey Award (# 17) and was named Company of the Year by the National Association of Food Banks and Feeding America’s New York Chapter. In 2016, it was named Company of the Year by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for the second year in a row.

Work

Some of the most important work done in the fight to end hunger is performed by volunteers. We rely on the help of volunteers for important jobs like ensuring food doesn’t go to waste, packing meals for our campus pantries, and helping prepare and serve meals to seniors

In 2020

Food Bank For New York City is grateful for the support we have received from passionate volunteers as we continue to mobilize resources to help New Yorkers in need across the five boroughs. In March, we made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend our onsite volunteer programs and shift to paid temporary workers to support operations at our Community Kitchen & Pantry in West Harlem and our Warehouse & Distribution Center in Hunts Point. This has allowed us to maintain a safe environment for our clients with a regular, dedicated workforce, while also fueling our city during this challenging time and supporting New Yorkers who are currently out of work.

New York is not only Broadway or Central Park. New York is those in need, too! And the Food Bank of New York is doing its finest to provide food, clothes, and support to them!

This is not the first time that the Food Bank of NYC is featured on our website!
