Organizations providing aid to people with mental illnesses in New York

Mental issues are a serious threat to modern society. Everyone has suffered from one at some point. They are stigmatized and people rarely share what and how they feel. That is why celebrities and various organizations have taken up the mission to help. And here are some of the biggest organizations in New York providing aid to people suffering from mental illnesses:

NAMI New York State

The National Alliance on Mental Illness is the biggest organization for people with mental sicknesses. It was founded in 1979 and it has an affiliate in every state.

NAMI-NYS’s mission is to support people who struggle with mental disorders and their families. The organization provides advocacy, education, and public awareness. It aims to make the life of people who suffer from mental illnesses and the life of their families and friends better. It raises awareness to make society tolerant and friendly to mentally ill people.

NAMI teaches families how to overcome all difficulties when living with a sick person. So the support they provide is of great importance because people in similar situations feel alone and powerless. NAMI’s support groups are open for anyone who has experience with mental disorders. They are very useful because people share their own practices and learn from one another. This way the organization has a helpline for emergency cases when people do not know what is the right action to take.

The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) is an American non-profit organization founded in 2001 in New York City. NEDA aims to decrease the number of people suffering from eating disorders and to raise awareness about these illnesses. The organization provides education, support, and quality care. Eating disorders are serious mental and physical diseases and it is very important for people to be more informed about them. NEDA provides life-saving resources through different programs and services. It forms a community of support.

One of NEDA’s programs is The Body Project. The program helps college girls to accept their bodies the way they are. It raises awareness about the serious consequences of starving or being on a strict diet.

The Postgraduate Center for Mental Health is an organization founded in 1945 in New York.  Its purpose was to provide mental healthcare to veterans from World War 2. Now the organization provides housing and quality care for mentally ill people.

The organization owns sixteen buildings where it provide shelter for homeless people with mental disseases. PCMH has a key role in reducing the number of homeless people living on the streets of New York.

The Jed Foundation

Founded in 2000, it is a non-profit organization that aims to protect the mental health of teenagers and to decrease the cases of suicide amongst them. The foundation partners with many schools and colleges. It runs different programs that help youngsters and their families to go through all emotional or social challenges.

New York State Office of Mental Health

The Office of Mental Health (OMH) operates all psychiatric centers across the state of New York. Its mission is to maintain the good mental health of all New Yorkers. It provides help to adults with serious mental problems and children with emotional disorders.

The job done by the organizations providing aid to people with mental illnesses is invaluable. You can check the organizations that support those with AIDS in NYC, and the shows providing insight into what it is to live with a mental disorder. There are some good movies, too.
